Video Interviews: FPD World Views: Interview with Cypriot Ambassador (Parts 1, 2 & 3)

Foreign Policy Digest is pleased to offer to its readers a special three-part interview with Andreas Kakouris, the ambassador for Cyprus to the United States, conducted by Robert Friedman, Managing Editor of Foreign Policy Digest.

The interview marks another installment of Foreign Policy Digest “World Views”, a series of interviews on contemporary foreign affairs topics conducted by the staff of Foreign Policy Digest with diplomats and foreign policy-makers, available on the Foreign Policy Digest website and the Foreign Policy Digest channel on YouTube.

The first segment of the interview, Ambassador Kakouris discusses differences in media portrayals in the U.S. and foreign media on Cyprus and the Cypriot conflict, as well as common misconceptions outside of Cyprus of the island and its unresolved conflict.

In the second segment of the interview, Ambassador Kakouris discusses how the strategic location of Cyprus affects its role in global affairs, and addresses accusations that Cyprus seeks to impede Turkey’s joining the European Union.

In the third segment of the interview, Ambassador Kakouris discusses prospects for peace and a just resolution to the longstanding conflict on the island of Cyprus.

Robert Friedman is the Managing Editor of Foreign Policy Digest, a non-resident Fellow at the Georgetown Center on National Security and the Law and a Principal in the Truman National Security Project.

About the Author

Robert Friedman

Robert Andrew Friedman is an Associate in the Washington D.C. office of Venable LLP. Robert is a non-resident Fellow at the Georgetown Center on National Security and the Law and a Truman National Security Fellow. Most recently, he was a Law Clerk on the Senate Judiciary Committee staff of Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-RI) where he worked on national security issues and executive and judicial nominations. He was previously an aide to Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) where he handled speechwriting, policy analysis and constituent outreach in the areas of immigration, education, and housing. Robert has also worked for the vice chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Robert graduated cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center where he was the Senior Notes Editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law. He received a B.A. in political science from Emory University and studied public international law and conflict resolution at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. He is currently pursuing an M.A. in Government from Johns Hopkins University.
